Splittin’ from the Banana Republic

Posted by Ms. Kathy on May 28, 2007

Today I read an article in the LA Times by T. Christian Miller, author of Blood Money: Wasted Billions, Lost Lives, and Corporate Greed in Iraq, about banana plantation workers who are suing fruit and pesticide companies because of health problems that they believe came from exposure to pesticides.  I would like to see US companies have to abide by the same labor standards abroad that they do within our country. (Click here to read the article.)

One of my concerns is the fact that US consumers, and I have been/am one of them, want to have access to lots of cheap goods, including foods, and are willing to overlook the negative resulting human costs of the system that produces these goods, as long as it isn’t staring them in the face or making them (or their pets) ill, as in the recent issue with the contaminated wheat gluten from China.  Time to get out the Golden Rule book!
